Although I had traveled to Ivano-Frankivsk on several previous occasions, it was not until I had the privilege of living in the city for a protracted period of time during my Fulbright Scholarship in 2018-2019 academic year, that I in actuality got to know the city.
I was lucky to have an apartment in the center of the city, at the beginning of Sichovy Strilci Street close to the beginning of what is called the 100 metrivka (100-meter walkway) the continuation of Nezalezhnosty Street, and because of my good location I was able to walk almost anywhere I needed to go without taking public transportation.
Ivano-Frankivsk is a fairly small and quaint city as compared to the ones I am used to. I was able to walk on the 100-meter walkway which is lined with multiple restaurants, banks and stores and multiple trees on either side, thru any of several side walkways thru a small park called Ploscha Mickevycha and on to the Rynok Square, at which occur many of the main events in the city. From there a short walk to Maidan Sheptytsky where on one side is the Ukrainian Catholic Cathedral and on the other side the Regional Art Museum. Then going up Halytska Street one could easily walk to the main market full of fresh fruits and vegetables and other produce.
Going in the opposite direction down Hetman Mazepa Street one could come up to the City Lake and right across one can find the large Tartas Shevchenko park. Throughout the city there are many smaller parks with many different sculptures and monuments for all different types of commemorations, as well as many beautiful churches of various denominations.
The city boasts a university The Prykarpatsky National University and also a medical school the Ivano-Frankivsk National Medical University, which is attended by many foreign students.
There are many cultural events, fairs and festivals throughout the year as well as religious celebrations such as the “Koliada na Maisliach” which is a caroling festival at Christmas time. If one is into theater there is the Ivan Franko Theater and the Regional Philharmonic Theater where one can see symphonic and other theatrical productions.
People are very friendly and in general the city is a bustling place with much to do. It is a growing city with much new construction, but since the city is more than 350 years old it has many interesting historical and architectural sites throughout.
I am sure I left out many other interesting points of interest that can be found throughout the city, but I would encourage any traveler not to miss the opportunity to visit Ivano-Frankivsk in their travels through Ukraine and explore for themselves.
Хоча я мав нагоду відвідувати Івано-Франківськ кілька разів, саме тоді, коли я перебував за програмою наукових обмінів імені Фулбрайта у 2018-2019 рр., я справді пізнав місто. Мені пощастило мати помешкання в центрі міста на початку вул. Січових Стрільців поблизу початку Стометрівку (вулиці протяжністю у 100 метрів), яка є продовженням вулиці Незалежності. Через таке вдале розташування я міг ходити пішки будь-куди і не користуватися громадським транспортом.
Івано-Франківськ є невеличким та автентичним містом, порівняно з тими містами, до яких я звик. Я прогулювався Стометрівкою з її багатьма ресторанами, банками, магазинами та численними деревами з обох боків вулиці, бічними вулицями, парком на площі Міцкевича в напрямку Площі Ринок, на якій відбувалися головні події міста. Звідки швидко можна було пройти до Майдану Шептицького, де з одного боку українська греко-католицька церква, а з іншого – Івано-Франківський обласний художній музей (Музей мистецтв Прикарпаття). Піднявшись вулицею Галицька можна було легко дістатися до центрального ринку з великою кількістю овочів та фруктів та інших продуктів.
У протилежному напрямку була вулиця Мазепи, можна було дійти до міського озера, навпроти якого розташований великий парк Шевченка. У місті є багато невеликих парків з різними скульптурами, пам’ятниками з нагоди різних дат, а також багато гарних церков різних релігійних громад.
У місті є Прикарпатський національний університет, а також Івано-Франківський медичний університет, в якому є багато іноземних студентів.
Є також багато культурних подій, ярамарок та фестивалів протягом року, а також релігійний заходів, як от “Коляда на Мазлях” – фестиваль колядок на Різдво. Якщо комусь подобається театр, то можна відвідати Івано-франківський театр та обласну філармонію, де є концерти та театральні вистави.
Люди дуже люб’язні та загалом у цьому активному місті можна знайти заняття. Це місто, яке росте і яке будується, але оскільки місту більше ніж 350 років – тут багато цікавих історичних та архітектурних пам’яток.
Я впевнений, що не згадав усе, що можна було б згадати про місто, але я раджу кожному туристу відвідати Івано-Франківськ та побачити усе на власні очі.
